FilmFLEX Mandate

FilmFLEX at BCIT was developed over several years, culminating in our first intake of students in November, 2003.

Who Helped Us Build the Program

BCIT programs are guided by Advisory Committees, made up of individuals affiliated with related industries.  FilmFLEX was developed with guidance and input from a wide variety of film and television industry "stakeholders" - film unions, film commissions, independent producers, post production managers, and many others.  Our program was shaped and molded, and continues to be improved, with their input.

What Our Graduates Do

FilmFLEX has a unique focus in the world of film training.  Our mandate is to develop "independent producers".  We are not in the business of training individuals to take specific union-based roles.  Instead, we train people in three specific areas:

  1) Technical
2) Business
3) Marketing

Our graduates have the necessary skills to produce their product, sell it in the world market, and run an independent business.  Our goal is to stimulate a "home grown" industry in Canada, and assist in creation of an indigenous film and television production industry.

Our instructors are all skilled professionals in the film and television production industry, who bring a wealth of experience to our program.   Further information about the FilmFLEX program content is available HERE.

Course Structure

  1. Classes are small, with a maximum of 24 students per class.

  2. Each FilmFLEX program consists of 4 terms, 12 weeks each in length, 27 hours per week of instruction.

  3. FilmFLEX runs in three and half day a week blocks.

  4. We have two intakes a year, one in May and one in November.

  5. November intake runs Wednesday PM, all day Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

  6. May intake runs Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday morning.

"Kitchen Table" Production

In addition to a solid knowledge base, our program offers a high quality package of equipment and software to the student.  This package is part of the tuition cost of FilmFLEX, and is retained by the student after graduating from the FilmFLEX program.  This equipment package enables the graduate to "hit the ground running" in the film and television production industry.

As technology continues to change, the FilmFLEX equipment package will continue to evolve, bringing the most up to date equipment and software to our students.  One of the best aspects of FilmFLEX is the ability to bring production to the "kitchen table" - top quality results can be  produced from the student's home.  Access to equipment is never an issue, as each student has his/her own package of gear and software.
